Relevance

A quality link will be relevant to your niche and market. Irrelevant links count but they just aren’t up to par with it comes to increasing page rank.

Context

Quality links have context and come from keyword-focused websites. In most competitive markets, pages that rank well (and hold their rankings) are very well optimized and have tons of descriptive text on the page. You want your link surrounded by that keyword focused content.

Difficulty

In general, valuable links are difficult to obtain. There is an associated cost: whether its in the investment of the link itself (note that Im not talking about paid links), in the content that secures the link, in the site development and design, or in the time requirement getting in front of the webmaster. Valuable links are not inexpensive to secure, and theyre not easy to secure. The most valuable links come from sources where your competitors are unlikely to get the same link.

Humanity

Of course we all like getting links that don’t require any human contact:), but more often than not the most valuable back-links come from the sources that have an actual human being in charge of the website. This means you’re calling a webmaster, or emailing a contact person, or networking with numerous people in control of influential sites or blogs at a conference. There is always a human being responsible for creating and making link deals with others.

Credibility

You want links that come from trusted sites with high Page Rank already. If you can get links from credible websites those links will increase the perceived value of your site by virtue of the credible site.

Authority

Links that come from very authoritative sites are, obviously, some of the very best to have. If you can get a link from the imminent blogger in your field or get a link on the E-commerce site that is THE provider for your niche you’ve got yourself a legitimate authority link which is to be cherished and valued like your own son… :) .

Investment

Valuable links require an investment. You’ll need to put in some sort of effort whether it be actually paying for the link or doing the necessary schmoozing with the right people to get the link. Perhaps its even targeting some high quality content towards a set of high quality niches. Whatever it is the best links always require some kind of investment to get.
