Filipino Maids: Philippines’ Pride

Alice Sy | Business | Friday, February 26th, 2010

Whenever you go to Hong Kong, try to visit Statue Square. The place does not only offer a relaxing scenery, it also serves as a place where hundreds of Filipino maids flock there to meet, to chat, and to share their lives during their day offs.

In England, maids from the Philippines can find jobs in houses of the wealthy. They are hired by royalties, businessmen, and many others belonging to the upper class in society. It is not also difficult for these maids to look for house jobs in Italy and France. In Greece, families who can afford the services of a maid from the Philippines are considered rich.

Their exodus abroad may also be linked to their growing popularity, especially in terms of being hard working, dedicated and loyal. Among their other traits well-liked and desired of by their foreign employers are their being hospitable and honest.

Foremost, Filipinos are highlighted by their loyalty and dedication to their employees. Since they are thousands of miles away from their families, they have no one to channel their emotions and longing for their children. That is why Filipino helprs are so endeared to their employers that they treat them as their family. In return, their boss also reciprocates them and treats them also as part of their family. So, don’t wonder if your balikbayan relative gets home quiet emotional or carrying photo albums with pictures of her employee. Yes, they value family much and to a Filipino, her employees are also her family.

Filipino helpers, whether a college graduate or not, are observed to be naturally intelligent and resourceful. They can pick up instructions without further questions. They, too, work hard without supervision. The word workaholic is indeed, due to a Filipino. She’ll simply work and work and will only stop if said so by her boss. At times, they can also be feisty. They would even argue with their employer about a certain problem. They also know how to find a way and get out from every trial.

Filipinos are by and large known for their grasp of the English language. They are able to understand English far better than their other counterparts. They can also speak English more fluently. Thus, it is understandable why foreign employers would choose them over maids from other nations.

In some countries, to have a Filipino servant is a status symbol. In England, the aristocracy, celebrities, and millionaires hire Filipino helpers to their household. Filipino helpers are also among the higher paid servants since they impress their boss with their quality service. Filipino helpers in Italy are also prized for their good work. They even tell their employers how much salary they want to receive. In Greece, a household is considered middle class if it hires Albanian servants; while a household with a Filipino servant is hailed as rich.

But there is more to the name Filipino than being just called a servant. What makes Filipino maids endear to the heart of the world is not actually the physical looks. More than the hard work and dedication, a Filipino works with a full heart, a simple ingredient that no employer has ever found in other nationalities.

Buddhist Funerals – Importance And Customs

Kathy Tan | Business | Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

A Buddhist funeral contains extensive last rites carried out according to sacrosanct customs and traditions. Devout Buddhists believe that the soul attains freedom from the worldly cycle of life and death from the deceased person’s body during the funeral ceremonies and is allowed to reach a new level and move towards a greater existence.

The Buddhist funeral ceremonies which conclude with cremation in most cases, are done by monks with the help of the bereaved family. When a person has died, Buddhist monks recite verses from holy books to liberate the good energies from the soul. Meanwhile, the body is made ready and preserved so that even if the cremation takes place after some days of the death, the body doesn’t decompose. After bathing the body, it is put in a casket with candles, wreaths, fragrant incense sticks and a photograph of the deceased.

When the last rites are deferred to allow distant relatives to arrive for paying their last respects to the deceased, invited monks visit the home everyday to read and recite from the Buddhist holy book Abhidharma.

On the day of the funeral, monks perform the final rituals and their chief gives a brief speech in honour of the deceased person focusing on his achievements in life and comforting the aggrieved relatives that death is inevitable. Other rites like wrapping a white cloth around the coffin during the religious incantation and Pansakula, a ritual of passing on virtues and blessings to the departed soul are also performed.

Prior to the cremation, one of the family members or the nearest kin has to speak a word or two about the deceased. A light meal for all the visitors is arranged after the Buddhist funeral ceremony and the cremation is done.

Some alterations in the specific rituals may be found in various cultures, but these are the key rituals followed during a Buddhist funeral in many countries like Tibet, Thailand, and China by the followers of the religion.

Creative Real Estate Investing Done Right

Nathan Williams | Business | Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Creative real estate investing is a different way of obtaining real estate than traditional methods. Most buyers will obtain a mortgage from a bank and provide a down payment. Some buyers will pay cash but most buyers don’t have a lot of money laying around.

One method of creative real estate investing is an option. This is when the property is being sold to a buyer at a specified price or strike price during a certain period of time. The owner will sell the buyer an option before a determined date. On the determined date, the buyer can complete the purchase of the option or sell it to another buyer. This will depend on the value of the house. An option is used to buy a house with little cash.

The sandwich lease is a method of creative real estate investing that occurs when a tenant wants to leave their unit without having the option to leave written into their lease. To get out of their lease, the investor would find a replacement tenant who becomes their tenant and not the landlord’s tenant. The replacement will pay the rent to the investor who pays the landlord and keeps the profit. The new tenant will contact the landlord if they have problems with the unit. At the end of the lease, they will notify the landlord and not the investor. Their next lease will make them a tenant of the landlord.

A wholesale is when an investor buys large quantities of real estate from the bank and sells them quickly for a small profit. Distressed buyers will make a deal with the bank who will sell to the wholesalers. After buying the house from the bank, the wholesaler can make a quick profit by selling the house at markup.

A tax lien or deed is when the state sells a property after the taxes have not been paid. The owners of the property are given a certain period of time to pay their taxes. If the taxes are not paid in this time, the state will sell the home. Some states sell the tax lien at an auction. Depending on the state, the investor can obtain the property for the amount that is owed. Some states will start the auction at that price. The investor will own the property free and clear. Other states will sell the deed at a public sale. The investor can still get a great price and many have the convenience of buying the properties online.
