Mind The Gap

Jessica O\'Neal | Uncategorized | Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

A dodgy specification combined with a fixed price is every project managers worst nightmare, yet despite us all being in agreement on this there is still often a huge gapm between a projects needs and the assigned budget/resource.

Risk is the issue with this type of project, and more importantly who the risk lies with. In fixed price it is the supplier, and in T&M it is the customer, but whoever is responsible for the risk the most common risk is that of running over, and someone must take the hit on any lost time, funds or resource.

When a project is fixed price, theoretically it should be the supplier who is willing to shoulder the risk (and any related cost), as it is they who have set the deadline and all associated milestones. If a fixed price project comes in late then the cost is covered by the contingency that they added into their pricing, and if it comes in early then it means they get more profit. So everyone is satisfied, unless the project is completed so late that it takes the profit and contingency along with it, but then that’s the suppliers fault- right?

When practically applied this thinking falls down, as it is rare that the estimate that the supplier gives is the quote that gets approved. Usually there is some negotiation, and suppliers nearly always have to reduce their price as if they don’t there is always a competitor who will. This leads to them taking on fixed price projects and having to under scope them to fit within the budget.

Even in cases where the over run is entirely down to the supplier, they obviously still need to turn a profit in order to stay in business. So to overcome this problem need to stay in business and running unprofitable projects is not the way to do it! So to overcome this suppliers may decide to scale back the project and change the requirements, often leading to the much feared “change request” conversation- an area no one wants to get in to.

A possible resolution is to go back to the initial requirements of the project, rather than the cost and how they will be achieved. From here the gap can be ascertained and the client can see earlier the difference between what they want and what they will get.
A good Project Manager can reduce the stress in the project by revealing the gap to a customer as early on in the process as possible, so the battle can be reached and resolved sooner allowing the project to continue more efficiently. This can be achieved by allowing the customer to see small sections of the work as they are completed.

We call this procedure “Minding the Gap” and it can save hours of time and stress in the long run. It can be further enhanced by implementing project management software, as this can alert a project manager sooner rather than later to any issues or bugs which may affect the project.

Things To Consider When Planning For A Renovation

Sarah King | Uncategorized | Sunday, March 7th, 2010

The job of selling or giving a property on rent is never a simple one. You can win a lot or lose a significant amount in such dealings, hence it is very important to be careful.

There are a few things that you have to remember before putting a property up for sale. One of the major factors is whether the house has been preserved and renovated properly to give it a fresh look, as then there is every possibility that a potential buyer or tenant will want to take it up. A thorough renovation of the house with particular focus on interior design will ensure a good price from potential buyers. In all likelihood, the earnings would be much greater than what you invest on such renovation activity.

Even if an expert designer is hired to do the task, you may find yourself giving your own inputs on interior design, and hence your creative self will find a good expression. It will make you energized with the sense of having done something satisfying and the promise of a financial benefit will make you feel even better.

You must first assess what kind of tenants or buyers you are looking for before starting any renovation and interior design process. For example, a newly wed couple would like something modern and trendy, while an aged couple would look for something elegant yet comfortable.

The drawing room is the first space that captures the attention of anyone when he or she steps into your house. It is meant for family soirees and for moments spent with friends, and hence you must have the walls painted in vibrant colours. Wooden furnishings of the room can look as good as new if repairs are made and the wood is dressed with a fresh coat of paint. The room can be made a feast for the eyes by placing reasonably priced art works in it or putting paintings up on its walls.

It is generally accepted that the wife, who will run the house, is going to make most of the judgements regarding what makes a good house and what doesn’t. Hence the renovation of the kitchen must be done with due consideration on how women want their kitchen to look. The most important aspect of a kitchen is functionality, which must be emphasized by giving the appliances a new look and getting minor problems taken care of.

Once you are finished with the rest of the interiors, you must turn your focus on the exteriors. Getting the exteriors refurbished with a fresh coat of paint and taking care of the lawn would bring you another step closer to a lucrative deal.

Learn more about interior design and uncover how does property renovation increase the net worth of your property overnight.

Polygamy And The Mormon Religion – Is It Christian Faith?

Alfred Ras | Uncategorized | Friday, March 5th, 2010

For individuals that are not too well versed in either the Mormon religion or Christianity as society knows it they will often wonder what are the differences between these two religions. According to the Mormons they will consider themselves as the true Christians and the only church that is going to be recognized by God himself. First of all it must be remembered that the whole Mormon religion is based on Joseph Smiths vision that he purported to have in 1820 where to celestial beings appeared to him during this vision. It was declared to Joseph that that there was no true religion on earth and that he was going to be chosen to institute the new church religion.

One of the things that must be realized is that Christians believe that God is the spirit whereas Joseph taught that God himself was once a man and through his good way of living became a God. Joseph also uses the term God as plural and further believes that that man can and will become gods if they are to live their life the way that the Church of latter-day Saints promote. The Christians believe that Jesus is Lord of all and creator of all the Mormons will tell you that this was the spirit brother of Lucifer

There is no way that you would ever get any Mormon to tell you that the Bible was the only book to be depended on. The Mormons have several books written by man and the most distinctive one is a book of Mormon which was written on the teachings of Joseph Smith. So as far as they are concerned this book is the only one that should be depended on. Most Mormons although they will refer to the holy Bible for some resources but this is most often for convenience and as a way to prove that they are true Christians. There are several other books that they will depend on as well and this is “The Doctrine and Covenants” and the “Pearl of great Price”.

In the book “Doctrines and Covenants” it will have the revelations of polygamy. It’s interesting to note though that this revelation of polygamy did not come about until after the government was threatening to take action against the Mormon church for their stance on this subject.

The book “Pearl of great Price” suggested to the revelation that was used to make sure that the black society did not enter into the priesthood of the Mormons which means according to the Mormons that they could never become gods.

To add to all of these interesting takes of the Mormons one has to take a close look at their viewpoint . This becomes interesting in that they believe that there are several level to heaven, if fact there are basically three .Depending on your life here on earth will dictate which department or level of heaven that you will be able to go to. Their vision of how they are going to appear before God is wearing fig leaf aprons and holding all the good works that they have done while here on earth in their hands. It would seem that no matter what sins were committed here on earth everyone will have some type of good standing in heaven although it might take some longer than others to get there.

CCNA Exam Options

Bob Marshall | Uncategorized | Friday, March 5th, 2010

There are two options available to you to achieve your Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) certification. The first option is to take the single CCNA exam. Since this was too overwhelming to many CCNA candidates, Cisco created a second option for students to break the Cisco CCNA exam into two separate exams. In doing so, Cisco created a new entry level certification called Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT). This second option will be covered in detail later in this article as will be the three Specialized CCNA certifications.

Single Exam Option – CCNA exam 640-802 The current version of the CCNA exam is 640-802 and was last updated in November of 2007. Cisco seems to have a history of updating this exam approximately every three years. Coincidentally that is also the amount of time your Cisco CCNA certification is valid. So every three years, you must update your Cisco certifications according to the policies of Cisco at that time. This is one of the reasons why a Cisco certification is more valuable than many other IT certifications. By requiring you to recertify every three years, it ensures you are kept up to date with the quickly changing technologies in the IT field. The exam is 90 minutes in length and can be any where from 45 to 55 questions. There are 7 types of questions you may see are as follows:

Exam Question Formats # Single answer multiple choice -These are multiple choice questions where there is only one correct answer. A question will be posed, and a radio button will allow the user to select the proper answer to the question. # Multiple answer multiple choice -These are multiple choice questions where there are multiple correct answers. A question will be posed, and checkboxes will allow the user to select the proper answer to the question. # Drag and Drop (DND) -A green list of options will be provided on the left side of the screen, prompting the user to drag each of these to the correct yellow category box on the right side. The items can be removed from the chosen category and rearranged before submitting a final answer using the Submit button. # Fill in the Blank -The user will fill in the correct answer to a question or complete an existing sentence, making an accurate statement. # Router Simulation -Individual real-world scenarios are given, and the user is prompted to negotiate the proper network arrangement or perform the functions necessary using a simulated hyperterminal screen. # Testlet -The user is provided with a real-world scenario, and 3 or more questions are posed with regard to the scenario given. # Simlet -This is similar to a testlet question, however each sub-question is offered in the form of a router simulation.

Two Exam Option – ICND1 640-822 & ICND2 640-816 As previously mentioned, the extensive amount of material covered in the single CCNA exam is too overwhelming for some exam takers. Thus Cisco provides an option to break the exam into two sittings. This has been speculated was in response to the high failure rate on the CCNA exam. Thus again illustrating why it is one of the most widely respected entry level IT certifications.

The first sitting is for the Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 (ICND1) 640-822 exam. Upon successfully completing this exam, you will have earned Cisco’s newest entry level certification, the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT). This exam is 90 minutes in length and will cover 40 to 50 questions. You will encounter the same 7 question formats as you could see on the CCNA exam so there is no need to repeat them here again. Noteworthy for those preparing for the exam is which topics are covered on the ICND1 and what topics are covered on the ICND2 exam. Accordingly, we have provided the break down of which topics are covered in each exam below.

ICND1 Exam Topics # Describe how networks function, identifying major components, function of network components and the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model. # Using the host-to-host packet delivery process, describe issues related to increasing traffic on an Ethernet LAN and identify switched LAN technology solutions to Ethernet networking issues. # Describes the reasons for extending the reach of a LAN and the methods that can be used with a focus on RF wireless access. # Describes the reasons for connecting networks with routers and how routed networks transmit data through networks using TCP / IP. # Describe the function of Wide Area Networks (WANs), the major devices of WANs, and configure PPP encapsulation, static and dynamic routing, PAT and RIP routing. # Use the command-line interface to discover neighbors on the network and managing the routers startup and configuration.

The second sitting is for the Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 2 (ICND2) 640-816 exam. This exam is 90 minutes in length and will cover 40 to 50 questions. You will encounter the same 7 question formats as you could see on the CCNA exam so there is no need to repeat them here again. Upon successfully completing this second exam, you will have earned your Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) certification.

ICND2 Exam Topics # Review how to configure and troubleshoot a small network. # Expand the switched network from a small LAN to a medium-sized LAN with multiple switches, supporting VLANs, trunking, and spanning tree. # Describe routing concepts as they apply to a medium-sized network and discuss considerations when implementing routing on the network. # Configure, verify, and troubleshoot OSPF. # Configure, verify, and troubleshoot EIGRP. # Determine how to apply ACLs based on network requirements, and to configure, verify, and troubleshoot ACLs on a medium-sized network. # Describe when to use NAT or PAT on a medium-sized network, and configure NAT or PAT on routers. # Identify and implement the appropriate WAN technology based on network requirements.

Advanced CCNA Certifications Once you achieve your CCNA certification, you have many options open to you in the Cisco world. In 2008 Cisco introduced three advanced CCNA certifications which focused on specialization in different technologies. Obtaining your CCNA is a perquisite for any of these advanced CCNA certifications. Each is obtained by completing one additional exam. These three certifications are as follows:

CCNA Voice which is obtained by completing the 640-460 or 642-436 exam. This exam validates associate-level knowledge and skills required to administer a voice network. Focusing on the required skill set for specialized job roles in voice technologies such as voice technologies administrator, voice engineer, and voice manager. It validates skills in VoIP technologies such as IP PBX, IP telephony, handset, call control, and voicemail solutions.

CCNA Security certification which is obtained by completing the 640-553 exam. This exam validates knowledge and skills required to secure Cisco networks. With a CCNA Security certification, a administrator demonstrates the skills required to develop a security infrastructure, recognize threats and vulnerabilities to networks, and mitigate security threats. The CCNA Security exam puts emphasizes on core security technologies, the installation, troubleshooting and monitoring of network devices to maintain integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and devices, and competency in the technologies that Cisco uses in its security structure.

CCNA Wireless certification which is obtained by completing the 640-721 exam. This exam validates associate-level knowledge and skills to configure, implement and support of wireless LANs, specifically those networks using Cisco equipment. With a CCNA Wireless certification, administrators can support a basic wireless network on a Cisco WLAN in a SMB to enterprise network. The CCNA Wireless exam includes information and practice activities to prepare them for configuring, monitoring and troubleshooting basic tasks of a Cisco WLAN in SMB and Enterprise networks.
